Communication Protocols – Lab 5

Spanning Tree Protocol

In this Lab, the students learn about basic STP which defined in IEEE 802.1D standard. STP removes any redundant paths that could cause a loop in the network thus ensures that there is only one logical path between all destinations on the network.

This lab is devoted to the observation of the STP operation over the looped neSTPtwork topology. The topology itself was very simple – four switches, sequentially connected into each other, like in a ring.

To check STP details on switches the students use the « show spanning-tree » CLI command.

Next, the students continue the observation of the STP behavior in the occurrence of topology changes. To stimulate a link failure, the students shut down on link on the Root Bridge and enable the debug spanning-tree events in order to monitor the situation in real-time.
